Pledge Wall Quotes

Soraya Adejare

Green Party

Brownswood, Hackney

I grew up in poverty; it was political decisions that facilitated this. In the sixth richest nation in the world there is no reason for any child to experience the same. I am committed to working towards a child poverty free London.”

Ruth McGregor

Labour

Crystal Palace and Anerley, Bromley

Thank you for taking this forward; child poverty is a very serious concern in our ward and I am committed to tackling this.

Sam Dodgshon

Liberal Democrats

Pembridge, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Poverty in childhood creates inequality throughout life. I have been and will continue to work towards building a better country when creating equity is standard not a luxury

Brian Debus

TUSC

Hackney Central, Hackney

It is an absolute scandal that 50 % of children in Hackney are living in poverty and this under a Labour Government and Council.
The council should provide free school meals and breakfast clubs in all schools and nurseries. There also needs to be an uplift in the minimum wage to £15 /hour and a commensurate increase in universal credit to match this.

Alison Davy

Haringey Socialist Alliance

Northumberland Park, Haringey

Northumberland Park is one of the poorest wards in Haringey. Our community is neglected and left behind. I will stand against further cuts, continue to run a community food bank and support our local adventure playground. I will advocate for community spaces to be made available at no cost to community led mutual aid projects.

Asif Zamir

Independent

Stonebridge, Brent

My Pledge for a Poverty-Free Stonebridge. As an independent candidate and a neighbour in Stonebridge, I want the 4in10 network to know that I pledge my unwavering commitment to the children of our ward. In Brent, over 40% of our children are being denied their basic rights due to the crushing weight of housing costs and systemic inequality.

My pledge to you is to:
Put Families First: I will advocate for local policies that address the root causes of poverty in Stonebridge ward, from protecting community spaces to supporting affordable childcare.

Amplify Every Voice: Working with specialist partners of the 4in10 network, I will ensure that the specific needs of our diverse communities are never ignored in the borough.

Demand Accountability: As an independent, I am free to challenge failing systems and fight for the resources our schools and community hubs truly deserve.

Child poverty is not inevitable; it is a policy choice. In Stonebridge, I choose to stand and fight for the future of our children.utual aid projects.

Kamala Kugan

Independent

Coombe Vale Ward, Kingston Upon Thames

Nearly 1000 kids living in Temporary Accommodation, under perform in their Key Stage tests compared to their peers. Yet the Council has nearly 300 empty Council houses and underspent on its capital budget. Some 40% of care leavers are NEETs. Highly paid senior leadership team need to add value. have higher professional standards in public office and better join the dots.

Aidan Stimson

Labour

West Dulwich, Lambeth

I am very happy to support this pledge, as tackling and ending child poverty is a priority for me!

I am so proud that the Labour government removed the two child limit, taking 450,000 children out of poverty, but we still have so much more to do!

Dominic Kirkbridge

Green Party

North Hanwell, Ealing

No child should grow up in poverty—especially in a country where big corporations make such large amounts of money from us—and it starts with the right support in the local community. In Ealing, I want to help reverse Labour’s disastrous plans to close children’s centres to help given children the start they deserve.

Josh Matthews

Liberal Democrats

Catford South, Lewisham and Mayoral Candidate

For me, politics should - and the Liberal Democrats do - work to give everyone the platform to live their own version of a best life. Tackling poverty and inequality across housing, health, environment, education, safety, and the economy and cost of living are all essential to any level of freedom, fairness, and equality of opportunity.

The cost-of-living crisis has caused huge financial hardship across the country and restricted the life chances of millions. The Government response has been a series of patchy and short-term fixes.

Liberal Democrats believe that no one should fear for their future, struggle to put food on the table, or worry about heating their home, least of all children. Our aim is to make the UK the best place in the world to work, raise children and enjoy retirement by ensuring that proper support is in place for those who need it.

Liberal Democrats have long-championed scrapping the two child limit on (and the benefit cap in due course), and the Government finally listening to these calls after months of pressure, is welcome. Of course, more can and should be done to support children out of poverty.

The Government is not acting fast enough, and Lib Dems have previously highlighted that the Government’s Child Poverty Strategy will still leave four million trapped in poverty. Local authorities must do what we can to tackle child poverty as a priority, working with organisations like 4in10 to take all steps possible to make London a child poverty-free city.

Sarah King

Labour

Champion Hill, Southwark

I am proud to renew my pledge towards a child poverty free London.

In Southwark, we're already delivering free school meals, Family Hubs, targeted support for families - and I'll keep pushing locally and nationally to ensure every child gets the start in life they deserve.

Alastair Binnie-Lubbock

Green Party

Hackney Downs, Hackney

Child poverty blights lives and undermines all other work to improve our society. We must do anything to address income inequality and tax the rich.

Sally Zlotowitz

Green Party

Lea Bridge, Hackney

No child should be growing up in poverty in the UK and yet 64% of children in Hackney are living in income deprived households. The levels of inequality in the UK are beyond words. This is a number one issue for Greens.

Zoë Garbett

Green Party

Dalston, Hackney and Mayoral Candidate

Thank you for your continued hard work campaigning to end child poverty. I can confirm that we absolutely pledge to work towards a poverty free London if elected in May - I am making this pledge as the Green Candidate for Mayor of Hackney.

Hackney residents are being priced out of the borough. With 40% of our community living in income-deprived households and food poverty at record levels, we can't afford not to act. Furthermore, poverty and hunger remain some of the most urgent challenges facing our children, with the National Education Union warning how deeply these issues affect children’s ability to learn. We will incorporate anti-poverty approaches across all services in Hackney - for example we want to phase out the use of bailiffs for council tax debt, looking to phase in 100% council tax relief and review the alternative nursery fee structures proposed by families to work towards lowering cost of childcare.

A Green-led Hackney Council will host a summit of anti-cuts councils to coordinate a nationwide campaign to pressure the central government for overhauled local government fiscal powers and funding that truly meets need.

Graeme Henderson

Labour

Roehampton, Wandsworth

No young person should grow up in poverty. A person’s formative years are the most important. The UK is a sufficiently wealthy country to eliminate such a scandal.

Tyrone Scott

Green Party

Hackney Wick, Hackney

I worked closely with 4in10 and Child Poverty London when I worked in housing advice and support and this is an issue very close to my heart.

Matt J. McLaren

Liberal Democrats

Winchmore Hill, Enfield

As someone who, at times, grew up in poverty; I know just how important it is to end child poverty.

Hayley Jukes

Green Party

Woodside, Haringey

As a teacher and former youth worker, I care passionately about young people and want to do everything possible to ensure that no child has to face hunger or homelessness.

Nick Kelly

Labour

Ladywell, Lewisham

Child poverty has lifelong consequences. Tackling poverty is a priority for Labour.

Vikas Aggarwal

Liberal Democrat

Rotherhithe, Southwark

Where, and who you are born to is pot luck. But growing up with a stable home, food on your plate, and a good education shouldn’t be. I want more affordable housing, more mental health support, more youth clubs, and more safe green spaces.

Nusaybah Ali

Green Party

Golders Green, Barnet

I am someone that studied and have become a qualified debt advisor whilst working as an assistant to a human rights lawyer and I saw first hand how poverty affected adults, how it made them vulnerable and now understand that for children poverty makes them much more vulnerable to horrific situations and I don’t think that any child should go through this.

Nick Torry

Green Party

Telegraph Hill, Lewisham

Poverty is at the root of so many of society's ills. In one of the richest countries in the world, child poverty simply isn't acceptable and should be eradicated entirely.

Anne Gray

Green Party

West Green, Haringey

The Green Party has long advocated a universal basic income without conditions relating to seeking work, joining job centre schemes, etc. Whilst this is a long term aim, steps towards it would include ending the aggressive sanctions regime for jobseekers, reversing cuts for disabled people, and ending the benefit cap, whilst working at London and national level towards rent controls which would lower housing costs and avoid so much public money going to landlords in the form of housing benefit.

Nicholas Blincoe

Green Party

Hoxton West, Hackney

Hackney has shocking child poverty levels, which is all the more obscene in areas of such wealth we have to tackle child poverty to create a better, fairer and more hopeful society

Steve Gardner

Social Democratic Party

Hillingdon East, Hillingdon

No child should have to live in poverty in the modern world let alone in our capital city. We should all do what we can to prevent this from happening and give every child a poverty free upbringing and the best possible start in life.

Maria Mckenna

Green Party

Perry Vale, Lewisham

Let’s end child poverty for good. Children are our future.

Victoria Hornby

Green Party

Barking Riverside, Barking and Dagenham

Children are our tomorrow and to carry on our legacy. No child should go through poverty they should be cherished not suffered.

Rachel Brooks

Green Party

Village, Merton

As a mum to two young children, I know how parents only want to protect and nourish their children, and the guilt and heartache when you can't. Child poverty should not exist in a wealthy country such as this, and no parent should have to watch their child suffer due to failings of the state. I wholeheartedly support this campaign.

Marie Pye

Labour

Leytonstone , Waltham Forest‍ ‍

Tackling child poverty is one of the things that drives me to stand as a Labour councillor. I am proud to stand on a manifesto that includes our commitment to develop an Anti-Poverty Plan for Waltham Forest. And we will work with community groups across our borough to put this plan into action. I will do everything in my power to work towards a child poverty free London.

Scott Ainslie

Green Party

Streatham St Leonards, Lambeth ‍

No child should go hungry in one of the richest cities on earth. It sickens me to my core that every single government has failed to eradicate child hunger in this city - that the levels of inequality are disgusting

Mark Phillippo

Green Party

Beckenham Town and Copers Cope , Bromley

We cannot be a truly great city without ending child poverty here in London.

Huw Buckley

Green Party

Wimbledon Town & Dundonald, Merton

One child living in poverty is too many. This should be something that politicians across the spectrum agree to, regardless of ideology.

Tanya Dunne

Green Party

Sydenham, Lewisham

I grew up in poverty. It never leaves you. We must end it once and for all

Edna Fergus

Labour

Becontree, Barking and Dagenham

I will work closely with my colleagues towards ending child poverty in our local communities

Kemi Akinola

Labour

Tooting Broadway, Wandsworth

Poverty in childhood creates inequality throughout life. I have been and will continue to work towards building a better country when creating equity is standard not a luxury

Luke Sorba

Labour

Telegraph Hill, Lewisham

I am completely committed to eradicating child poverty and making the best use of local council resources towards that end as well as lobbying central government to ensure that economic equality remains a fundamental priority.

Rachel Collinson

Green Party

Bridge, Redbridge

If we can't eliminate child poverty, we are not a civilised nation. I'm proud to say that Green Party policy is designed to do just that.

Ben Bleet

Green Party

Palmers Green, Enfield

Our children’s future is being eaten by inequality, this needs to stop and the answers are there. The Greens will let them get through.

Dominic Twomey

Labour

Eastbury, Barking and Dagenham

Tackling child poverty in LBBD is my top priority as Leader of the council. We will be doing everything within our power to reduce and ultimately try and eradicate child poverty within the borough.

Victor Chamerblain

Liberal Democrats

Borough and Bankside, Southwark

I commit to working towards a child poverty free London.

David Boothroyd

Labour

Westbourne, Westminster

In the past four years I've been able to direct support to vulnerable families and children. It's vital to keep this up so everyone starts life with the best opportunities.

Mohammad Chowdhury

Labour

Mile End,Tower Hamlets

As a social worker and a councillor, I see every day how poverty limits a child’s health, education, and future opportunities. No child in London should have their potential defined by their postcode or their family’s income. I support Child Poverty Free London because every child deserves safety, dignity, and the chance to thrive — and it is our collective responsibility to remove the barriers that hold them back.

Stevan Cirkovic

Liberal Democrats

Kennington, Lambeth

Kids should be able to broaden their horizons, not worrying about the basic necessities. The good news: Child poverty is avoidable. But it needs a whole community approach!

David Gardner

Labour

Charlton Village and Riverside, Greenwich

All children should have the same opportunity regardless of their circumstances and household income, a decent income with wrap around support (like breakfast and after-school clubs, free school meals etc.) as well as the London Living Wage are all essential, but we need a passionate commitment that no child is brought up in poverty.

Faith Ruth Obiaka-Hayward

Independent

Junction, Islington

As a councillor, I will work to tackle child poverty by supporting families with affordable housing, access to free school meals, quality childcare, and strong local services. Every child deserves the chance to grow, learn, and succeed without hardship. No child should be left behind.

Riann Mehta

Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition

Underhill, Barnet

I will oppose all cuts that are proliferating child poverty. Socialism is the only solution to child poverty, and I will fight for against child poverty uncompromisingly.

Marijn van de Geer

Green Party

Acton, Ealing

This is an incredibly important issue - one that baffles me every time I see the numbers. Children, or anyone for that matter, living in poverty in this country in this day and age is completely unacceptable and is a symptom of a system that looks after the rich and ignores the poor. Child poverty is attached to failings of an antique system that doesn't care about wellbeing, sharing, looking after each other and it needs to change immediately. Love and care for our fellow human beings and our planet go hand in hand, and I would be thrilled to work with the 4in10 Network to tackle child poverty and expose the reasons for why children in the UK live in poverty.

Aadi Venkatesh

Green Party

Rotherhithe, Southwark

It's an egregious failure on the part of our government, that one of the richest countries in the world is seeing this level of child poverty. It is the moral responsibility of every elected official to treat this like the urgent crisis that it is.

Alison Stoecker

Independent

Hillrise, Islington

Every child deserves safe housing, a meaningful education and healthy food for every meal. Its not to much to ask. By working together we can achieve this.

Aidan Keogh

Green Party

Clock House, Bromley

Labour have failed to take appropriate measures to stop child poverty. No child should live in property - only the Greens will give the future generation of this country the support it needs.

Laura-Louise Fairley

Green Party

Hackney Downs, Hackney

As a candidate, mother, and humanitarian worker, I'm absolutely committed to ending child poverty in Hackney - but also advocating for the end of child poverty across the UK and around the world - for good. This level of inequality in our societies is inhumane and inexcusable.

Hugo Pierre

Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition

White Chapel, Tower Hamlets

Stop cuts, end austerity, make the rich pay - fight for a socialist future to end child poverty

Suzanne Wise

Green Party

Chaucer, Southwark

The levels of child poverty in London one of the greatest cities in the world, are a disgrace , a political choice and something I would work hard to eliminate

Geraldine Ker

Green Party

Bromley Common and Holwood, Bromley

Child poverty in a city as wealthy as London is a political failure, not an inevitability. I'm pledging my support for a child poverty-free London — because a fair city works for everyone.

Kezia Coleman

Labour

Kingston Town, Kingston

No child should grow up without the security, opportunities and support they need to thrive.

In Kingston, our manifesto recognises that tackling poverty must be at the heart of building a fairer community. That means supporting families with the cost of living, standing up for good jobs and decent wages, protecting vital local services, and working with schools, charities and community groups to ensure every child has the chance to succeed.

As a councillor, I will work with partners across London to challenge the causes of child poverty and push for practical solutions that support families and give every child the best start in life.

Rebecca Jones

Liberal Democrats

St Mary's and St James’, Islington

Every child deserves the best start in life!

James-J Walsh

Labour

Rushey Green, Lewisham

Building a better future for all has to be the over-arching mission. The way we do it is by investing in the next generation.

Ted Maxwell

Independent

Bethnal Green West, Tower Hamlets

I will focus on poor housing management and will work on ways to help young people to get ahead in life. I will convene meetings between relevant groups and organisations, I will support the activities of council departments and charities working on this topic and I will protect community buildings that provide spaces and activities for children and families.

Cameron Camina

Green Party

Friern Barnet, Barnet

I see the effects of child poverty every day in my work as a teacher - my mission as your councillor would be to eradicate that poverty, in Barnet and beyond.

Sarah Sachs-Eldridge

Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition

Brimsdown, Enfield

As a councillor I am committed to fighting for no cuts to public services including youth services, libraries, and SEND, for an immediate increase to a £15/hr minimum wage, for councils to sue their hardship funds to make sure no family is struggling as a reult of Trump's war raising our bills. I am also committed to fighting for a new mass party of the working class to fight for this.

Rachel Bentley

Liberal Democrat

North Bermondsey, Southwark

Absolutely willing to sign this pledge again but more importantly I am 100% committed to eradicating child poverty in London.

Samantha Gardiner

Green Party

Rushey Green , Lewisham

As someone who grew up in a single parent household myself where money was incredibly tight I want to help safeguard and protect children, working to eradicate child poverty. Children are acutely aware when parents are struggling and poverty impacts them in deeper ways beyond the obvious things we may think of. As a children's nurse and a parent myself, I am passionate about doing all I can to ensure every child has access to good nutrition, warm safe housing and appropriate provisions. I am proud to sign the 4in10 child poverty campaign pledge.

Sue Jameson

Labour

Bruce Castle, Haringey

No-one, least of all, children should live in poverty in this country

Elmedina Baptista-Mendes

Green Party

Tollington, Islington

As a mother this is close to my heart.

Ferhan Sterk

Green Party

One of the most important duty of this government is to tackle child poverty. And since millions of promises, child poverty is still the top of the agenda. I will do evervthing I can to enforce local and national government to take more actions on this issue.

As a person who works with and researches children and young people, and as a compassionate human being, I feel strongly that in one of the richest countries in the world child poverty is a political choice that could be overcome through political will and lobbying towards wealth redistribution, as well as targeted local and national policy changes.

It is essential that we tackle child poverty. It's something I'm very passionate about. If elected, I will build on the Labour Party's Child Poverty Strategy and work with the Mayor of London to ensure that children in Teddington have access to all the support that is available.

I will push on the council to implement these strategies for local residents. A campaign that Twickenham Labour is pushing the current Lib Dem run council for, is to build more affordable housing in the area. If the council were to build more affordable housing, then that would lift many families in the borough out of poverty.

I have proudly supported The Mayor of London's rolling out of Free School Meals across London.

There is much to be done and I will work towards making a prosperous London, starting from my Ward and influencing across the whole city. I pledge that I will be working towards a child p
overty free London.

Child poverty is obviously a direct result of general poverty. That is a result of financial inequity - in that a very few people have so very much more money than the rest of us. There are about 215,700 millionaires in London out of about 9 million people, that's 2.4%. of all of us. Let's even that out a bit, they won't even notice, but we shall.

The main contributor to child poverty is the high cost of housing. I would push for small blocks of truly affordable social housing. I will continue to campaign for free school meals in UK to include secondary children.

Having children living in poverty is not only a huge shame for the 6nd (GDP!) richest country on this planet, but also a drastic violation of their human rights - of a good education, physical and mental health and decent living (conditions).

I've spent most of my first term fighting to end child poverty in Newham – absolutely committed to continuing that fight if re-elected. Universal free school meals, more council houses, ending benefit caps, and significantly more affordable (eventually free!) public transport are all desperately needed, as well as of course reform to council tax. I grew up in poverty, I will always fight to make sure as few children as possible growing up in Newham have to do the same.

Child poverty is unacceptable in any time and place, but in the fifth wealthiest economy in the world by GDP - itself a metric which has no regard to inequality, poverty or wellbeing - it is unconscionable. I pledge if elected to fight for the socialist principle of "from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs": we must direct the incredible resources of the United Kingdom to eradicating child poverty and giving every child the high quality of life they deserve.

As a Waltham Forest Labour 🌹 candidate I am supporting the 4in10 pledge for a Child Poverty Free London.

Tackling inequality and supporting families through the cost of living crisis has been central to our work locally, from benefit advice and community support in libraries, to free school meal holiday vouchers, breakfast clubs, and support for food banks and community organisations.

But we know there is still much more to do. Every child deserves the best start in life, and we are committed to working with communities, partners and the Labour government’s Child Poverty Strategy to help make that a reality.

Together, we can build a fairer borough for every child and family. ❤️

No child - anywhere in the world - should be living in Poverty when we have more than 1 billionaire in existence. Locally we can all come together to tackle this issue, but we need a national strategy. Perhaps it time we Tax wealth and use it amongst other things to safeguard our future - to feed, house, protect and educate our children.
